Two japanese car magazines (Best Car and Holiday Auto) have recently published concurring articles about Toyota's "upcoming" sub-86 coupe, which will be the cheaper of the three RWD cars the company aims to produce (the GT-86 being the middle child and the Supra the top-end version).

According to the reports, it will be RWD and will have a breadvan profile, with four seats and a hatch, and an overall length around 155-160 inches.

Toyota is said to be aiming for about 130hp from a 1.5 liter petrol engine, combined with a weight of less than 2 200lbs. Projected fuel economy would be around 70mpg on the very optimistic japanese cycle.

It is expected to go on sale in 2017, with a projected price under 15 000$. Oppo-gasm anyone?

So Toyota are stealing the creepy smile from old Mazdas and the rear of a 1-Series hatchback. Still a car like that will be a good thing, but the powerfigures are not so good. I don't know why Toyota a so stuck up of offering only one engine. It is cheaper to develop, but you limit the market, look at BMW and even Mazda for the MX-5, you must have at least 2 engine options.

Well it's supposed to cost 15k$ and weigh 2 200lbs or less. Could they make it more powerful? Probably. Would it still cost 15k$? No way.

If you want more power, that's what the GT86 replacement will be there for.

Plus, 130hp / 1 000kg should make for a 0-60 in the mid to low 8's, which is quick enough for a car at that price point.

I don't say it is bad, but why not have an even cheaper version with a 120hp or a TRD version with 180hp and $20k. I think one of the big problems of the Toyobaru not selling so well is the lack of engine choices/power choices. If they offered 3 power options, much more poeple would have bought it. I am not saying something crazy like 400hp, but those 250hp that everybody says the car needs.

Ahh.. Yes! I do agree, especially in regards to the GT-86. If they made a 1.8l / 170hp version with a 5-speed, smaller rims and fewer options for about 20% less I'd be very interested..

The TRD sub-86 would probably never happen though. Too close to an 86. Something with 150-ish hp, that could be relevant.

it has a very z3 coupe look to it. But I like it... Now let's see how bland they turn the concept images into production. Those headlights and probably that roof line won't transfer over I'm fairly certain. The intakes will be smaller, grille will be the double grille with a big glossy black bar as well.

Normally aspirated?

If it's normally aspirated, good god that's not going to be enough power. I also don't know how they'd get it so light: the length quoted is about the same as the Fiesta and Sonic, both of which are ~2500-2800 lbs.

If it's turbocharged then it would probably generate ~160 lb ft of torque, so that would be alright, and probably easy to tune for more power.

In my opinion it's kind of pointless. Okay it's rear wheel drive, and everyone loves rear wheel drive, but if it's a 130 hp NA engine it's not like the back end will really be able to do anything. So you'd be getting an underpowered hatchback that probably has less useable space than a FWD hatch (the driveshaft has to go somewhere) that happens to have rear wheel drive.

Starting under $15,000 wouldn't be anything special either, all the other hatchbacks in this segment start there too, and I'm fairly certain they all have more than 130 hp (although they're heavier)

Make it a turbocharged engine, Abarth-ish power levels, sell it for $18k, make all the monies.

You should think of it as a more practical replacement to the Miata NB that just so happens to cost less. And 130hp / tonne is not that bad, lots of GTI's had less than that.

Will there be a more practical alternative? Sure, but even thought the Focus ST exists, people still buy Miata's, though they're slower, smaller, worse on fuel and less practical.

It's not a replacement for an NB miata. It's going to be far more expensive than a good condition NB (NB's are in the 4 digit range). It's also not a convertible or a coupe.

Sure, lots of GTI's had less hp/tonne, but those are all considered slow by today's standards. If this was an economy car that's one thing, but the added price of a RWD system only to couple it with a weak motor makes no sense.

I'm not discussing practicality per se, I'm just pointing out that going to RWD will sacrifice cabin volume, so the whole thing is just a big oxymoron. It's a RWD hatchback that doesn't have enough power to take advantage of being RWD and doesn't have enough space to take advantage of being a hatchback.

I don't get the point of it being RWD is what I'm saying, and I don't see anyone buying it except for a handful of enthusiasts, unless the car could be had with a more performance oriented motor.
